Picture Windows - Highlight the Scenery and Brighten the Room
Do you have a beautiful view you’d like to showcase? A scenic view of your gorgeous garden full of creatively landscaped flowers and bushes would make the perfect picture to hang on the wall. If you own a log cabin, it would be ideal to capture the serenity of the forest setting. Why not consider installing a picture window to highlight the scenery and brighten the room with natural sunlight? A picture window is a large window which can be installed in any outside wall of your home.
Types of Picture Windows
Originally picture windows were made of several panes of glass arranged in a grid pattern. This classic style is making a comeback today because it’s much easier to replace one small pane of glass verses the whole window.
Double pane windows are also popular today because they have great insulation. They are made of two glass panes with a layer of air in between. You can have either choose a clear or grid pattern depending on the look you want.
Picture Window Designs
When designing your picture window, there are a plethora of options. If you’d like a clear view you can choose a single large pane of glass to fill the entire window area, or several panes of glass held together in a grid pattern.
Most picture windows are too large to open, but there are several designs which allow that option if you prefer. A big picture window can be surrounded by smaller windows which open to the outdoors, or you can choose a bay or bow window design to fill the space. Both options have a large view with the ability to install windows that open.
Since picture windows are designed to let in a lot of sunlight, many companies offer picture windows with special coating to protect your carpet and furniture from the fading and damage caused by UV rays. You’re contractor will be more than willing to discuss the different options with you and figure out what’s best for the part of the country where you live.
Picture Window Treatments
Since picture windows are designed to provide a view of the world outside your home, you’ll want to use a window treatment that helps to frame the picture seen through the window. If your window looks out over a secluded area there is probably no need to cover it, but if not, window coverings will be necessary for privacy. There are several options for you to consider:
- Shutters provide a simple contemporary look with clean lines. With these you have the option to cover the window completely, open the slats and let in some light, or open the entire shutter to allow full view of the outdoors.
- Shades and blinds offer temporary coverage when you need it. With several different design options, you’re sure to find shades or blinds that work with your decorating style. Most of the time, you’ll also want to include a valence, curtains or maybe both so the shades don’t appear so stark.
- Window toppers such as a valence or a cornice can stand alone and soften the shape of a picture window. This is a great option if you don’t need very much privacy, but want to add some design to the top of the window.
When it comes to replacing a window for a large space that overlooks a scenic view, you can’t go wrong with picture windows!
