How to Create a Home Remodeling Timeline That Is Realistic

In the hectic society we live in, deadlines are everywhere. If the deadline is not with your job, it is with your kid’s activity, or some other type of deadline that we are trying to meet. When embarking on a home remodeling project, it can be difficult to create a timeline that is realistic and able to be met.

Here are some tips to help keep your home remodeling projects on schedule:

  • Home improvement projects do not begin when hammers start hitting the nails.  Home remodeling starts several weeks or months beforehand. In order to not be scrambling around for finish items, before starting your project wait until all special items ordered have arrived.
  • Have a conversation with your contractor that is clear and to the point and make a timeline with a schedule of events. In addition to your project, will they be working on others? Or do they do dedicate work time to only you? If they have several projects happening at the same time, plan out the timetable with your project manager. If you need the project completed by a certain date, inform them in advance.
  • Are you, as the homeowner, responsible for materials? Have them ready when they are needed by your contractor if you are.
  • Remember, any changes made at the last minute add time. Try to keep changes at a minimum and stay with the original plan, material selections, finishes, etc.
  • Surprises are known to happen when remodeling. Try to predict as much as you can and if you have concerns bring them up with the contractor.  But keep in mind the unexpected may happen.  At times home remodeling uncovers unknown damage or issues that need to be corrected before work can proceed.
  • If a specific deadline is required, make sure your contract has dates written for starting and ending. According to extras and change orders, revise the contract’s end date if needed.
  • Communication is extremely important. Keeping lines of communication open between you and your contractor is a key factor for staying on target with completion dates.

The main factors of a project’s desired outcome include quality, speed, and price. Rarely can you get all three, so homeowners should try to make only or one two of these a priority. You’re more likely to have things move smoothly so that you will receive a positive result.
