Minneapolis Home Improvement Tips: Common Remodeling Myths

Man Scratching Head Remodeling continues to increase in popularity, as more and more homeowners are staying in their homes and updating them rather than moving.  You may be considering home renovation project as a way to add comfort, value, or function to your existing home.  However, there are numerous false claims out there that should be addressed regarding remodeling. Some myths that every homeowner should be aware of are listed below.

These are the most widespread home improvement myths:

  • Projects always cost more and take more time than planned.  This is often the case for DIYers but not usually when you hire a professional home improvement contractor.  Many people think the contractors will underbid and then over-promise the work they are going to be doing. If you’re planning properly and doing research before moving forward, these should not be concerns. Give little to no allowances and have a proper contract and there should be no bumps along the way.
  • A handyman is qualified to complete your kitchen renovation.  This is a dangerous assumption to make.  A lot of times the local handyman is not licensed to do this type of work, so this also means they are not trained in the ins and outs of kitchen remodeling. If you’re hiring a local handyman for the project – be prepared for anything along the way. You might also be fined for using an unlicensed contractor to do the work for you.  It’s best to hire an experienced contractor.
  • The best procedure is to get plans and then research the contractors.  This is false; you do not have to have the plans before you hire a contractor. The architect and builder should work closely together on the project. You could even hire a whole in-house crew to do everything from design to layout to construction.  These companies are often called design-build contractors.  And keep in mind that not all projects require detailed plans.  If you’re just replacing the siding on your Minneapolis home, a specific plan isn’t needed.
  • Your home and even the yard will be trashed once they are finished with the project.  Sadly this can be true, but it doesn’t have to be.  With every contractor, the first priority should be to take the right measures to ensure that they protect your belongings and keep the dust to a minimum. Tour any of their existing projects to take a peek at how they work.
  • Use a friend or relative that is out of work and needs the money to do the renovation – you can save money.  If the person is not a trained professional then you might find bumps along the way, and it could cost you more in the long run. You shouldn’t assume someone knows how to do something and when it comes to them not knowing how, you could spend more time and money in the end.
