The Top Reasons to Replace Old Windows

Replacing windows because they’re damaged or deteriorated is only one of the reasons that people choose to install new windows in their homes.  And while that’s certainly a necessity, there are a variety of other reasons, most of which can actually save you money in the long run.  Perhaps you’ve never considered a home improvement project as an economical step, but here are some things to think about if you’re unsure about whether replacing your windows is worthwhile.  These are the most popular reasons homeowners choose to do so.

Savings:  Modern window technology has provided a number of advances that make today’s windows highly energy efficient.  Depending on the frame material as well as other elements, you can expect your windows to pay for themselves in 7 or 8 years by reduced heating and cooling costs.  In addition to the energy savings, you’ll also be more comfortable in your rooms due to less draft and heat transfer.

Less Maintenance:  Traditional wood windows mean frequent maintenance, at least annually or more often.  When you choose low- or no-maintenance windows, that means you can put away your caulk gun and paint brush for good.  In addition to having to spend less of your free time on window upkeep, you’ll have less out-of-pocket costs for maintenance materials as well.

Home Security: If you select windows with locks which carry the American Architectural Manufacturers Association (AAMA) certified locks and vent locks, you can have peace of mind knowing that your windows comply with high security standards.  Vent locks are a relatively new product which allow you to lock a window in a partially open position.

Reduction in Interior Fading:  We love the sunshine that comes through our windows and brightens our homes, but unfortunately those same rays are wreaking havoc on the contents of the interiors, causing fading and premature deterioration of everything from carpeting to furniture.  Choosing windows with low E ratings and coating options can significantly reduce the penetration of damaging rays while still letting in light.

Exterior Appeal:  One of the easiest things you can do for a facelift or “makeover” of your home’s exterior is to replace your windows.  While more curb appeal won’t necessarily put money in your pocket, it can cause you greater satisfaction in your home as well as making it more attractive to a potential buyer if you decide to sell.  Modern windows mean those ugly, cumbersome storm windows can be done away with, and you can update your home’s profile by changing the window styles or adding such embellishments as grids and shutters.

Noise Reduction:  When you select quality windows which have good insulating value and choose double- or triple-pane glass, you’ll have less noise transference from the outside, up to 100%.  That can be an especially attractive benefit for homeowners living on busy streets or in a noisy neighborhood.

Ease of Cleaning:  Many windows now tilt inside, meaning you can clean your windows from the comfort of your home’s interior.  Not only does that make cleaning easier, it’s safer, too, because you’re standing on your floor rather than a ladder.

Add to Your Home Equity:  According to Remodeler Magazine, when you replace your windows you most likely can recover 70-75% of the cost in terms of increased home valueBecause of the increased equity, lenders are often very willing to extend home improvement loans for window replacement.
