May 1st – generally referred to as ‘May Day’, is celebrated by multiple cultures around the world. Many of us here in the U.S. can remember making colored paper ‘May baskets’ filled with paper flowers and distributing them to our moms, grandmas, and neighbors. (Often because the real flowers weren’t yet blooming. The significance of this day? The renewal of life with the coming of spring. And in some European cultures, it heralds the arrival of summer. While here in Minneapolis we’re not quite there yet with summer weather, it’s a great time to throw those windows open, air out your home, and perhaps consider refreshing the look of your exterior with new windows and/or exterior doors.
The first thing to consider is how well your existing windows and doors operate. If you’re having trouble opening or closing either of them, it’s definitely time to consider replacements. When the nice, mild spring weather hits, nothing is more frustrating than wanting sunshine and ventilation indoors and having windows or doors that stick or won’t stay open.
The next thing to consider is what your utility bills look like over the past couple of years, compared to the past. Do you feel like you’re using more energy just to keep your home comfortable? If so, there’s another good reason to replace your old windows and exterior doors with more energy-efficient ones.
But we’re here to tell you that wanting a new, up-to-date look for your home is a very valid reason for new windows and doors. While both these items can add to your home’s value as well as its curb appeal, you can’t put a price on the satisfaction you’d get from driving up to your home and smiling because of how great it looks. Or getting compliments from your guests and neighbors.
