6 Signs That Show You Need Replacement Windows and Doors

Now that the weather is warming up here in the Minneapolis area, it’s time to give the exterior of your home a good inspection.  Pay particular attention to your windows and exterior doors.

03mar14c3a156If you’re unsure of the signs to look for when it comes to needing new replacement windows and doors, then now is the time to find out.

You may be losing more heat than you know and in the cold MN winters, you have to make sure to keep as much of that heat inside the home as possible.

1. You’re Spending Way to Much on That Energy Bill

Your energy bill can be increased as much as 25% with old, drafty windows. By replacing these windows, you will find that your bill will decrease much more. By choosing multi-paned windows, you can decrease the drafts and increase the efficiency.

2. Do You Feel That Draft?

If you’re sitting inside and there seems to be a draft going through the home, then you will most likely find the problem with the windows or exterior door of the room. Outside air is leaking in, and your heating system is probably working a lot harder to maintain a steady temperature inside.

3. You Have Fading Furniture

The furniture in your home was once vibrant and lively. You would walk in the room, and it really stood out. However, now it looks old, worn down and washed out. This could be because of the UV rays going into your home through your windows.  They’re hitting your furniture (as well as the rugs or carpeting) and dulling the color. Finding UV resistant windows can fix this issue.

4. There Are Clouds in Your Windows When It’s Sunny

If you see a fog when it’s not cloudy outside, this is just that condensation that is building up between the glass panes because it has nowhere to go. Broken seals and unseen cracks can be the cause of this issue. Replacing the window entirely will ensure that this problem is fixed.

5. There is Visible Damage

If there are large cracks, breaks or dents around or in the glass of the window then this is most likely letting hot air out and cold air in. This is something that should definitely be fixed before it becomes a much larger issue in the future.

6. The Windows and Doors Just Don’t Seem to Fit or Work Anymore

If your windows rattle, that’s a good sign they are loose within their openings.  If doors and windows are difficult to open or shut (or won’t stay open or shut), there is also a problem.  Over time wood window and door frames can shrink or warp.  When the windows and doors are not fitting correctly in their designated spaces, it is time for a replacement with them.
