7 Tips for Getting Your Home Minnesota-Winter Ready

Yes, we’ve been having some really nice weather here in the Twin Cities, but are you ready for the inevitable?  Winter in Minnesota just can’t be avoided, so it’s wise to use this season to get prepared.

Fall here in the Minneapolis area is the perfect opportunity for you to get your home winter ready.

Checking your windows and doors now and making a few small repairs to problems you may find can help save you money in the long run. Below are a few tips to take into consideration when getting your home winter ready.

  • Check windows and doors for any weather stripping that may need to be repaired or replaced. When you have loose weather stripping it can allow drafts in ultimately resulting in higher heating bills.
  • If ;you’re having replacement windows installed, consider installing windows that have snap-in blinds or shades. These windows are manufactured with window treatments between the glass panes in the window and will help further the insulation and energy efficiency inside of your home, not to mention making keeping them clean a snap.
  • For more insulation protection, consider installing a storm door. A storm door will help protect your home from excess air and moisture leakage.
  • To further the protection that your doors and windows provide, be sure to clean debris from windows and doors hinges and sills. Doing this will create a tighter seal, keeping warm air in and cold air out.
  • In any door or window that may have been exposed to extreme weather elements – including a lot of sunlight – be sure to reapply caulk or other sealants around these openings. Once again, this will give you a better seal for keeping your heating costs down.
  • Windows and doors are not the only fixtures in your home that allow cold air and moisture to leak into your home. Repair any damaged exterior fixtures like your roof or your foundation. Keeping these well maintained is equally as important as your doors and windows. If you suspect any wood is rotting or beyond repairable, contact a professional right away.
  • Lastly, if your windows and doors only contain single pane glass, you will benefit greatly by replacing doors and windows with energy efficient ones. Consider double or triple paned glass windows. These windows will save you a lot of money on heating and cooling bills all year round, not only in the winter months.
