You’ve probably heard the term, ‘think outside the box.’ It’s often good advice, because human beings tend to stick to the familiar, the routine. At our Minneapolis replacement window company we experience this often. In particular, we’re talking about the shape, windows literally shaped like boxes – rectangular or square. But sometimes the perfect window solution for a home is NOT a box shape but a specialty shape.
What do we mean by specialty shape windows? The most common ones are round or oval, but you may often see other shapes such as triangular, trapezoid, round top, or arch top windows combined with rectangular or square windows. These windows might be fixed or operable. Their main function, however, is to add visual appeal or draw the eye to a particular area. This works both on the exterior and interior of your home. When seen from the exterior, these out-of-the-ordinary windows add that little something extra known as ‘curb appeal.’ Indoors they create a unique look in an area you might want to highlight.

A great example is the Gothic-look archtop window by Weather Shield, shown here paired with casement rectangular windows with decorative grids, typical of an older, traditional style. Notice how the archtop fits well in the open ceiling? And notice how your eye is drawn right to the area? The curving of the top portion of the grids draws the eye upward towards the beautiful wood ceiling overhead. And with the casement windows that are mulled together at both corners, this space gets maximum light and a great view. While we don’t have a photo of the outside of this home, we can bet it’s simply stunning.
