Add Window Cleaning & Repair to Your Minneapolis Spring Cleaning List

Now that the weather is warming up (finally), it’s time to get started on that exterior spring cleaning and maintenance list.   And if windows aren’t on your list, they should be.   April and May are great for cleaning your windows as well as checking for leaks or other items that need repair before you’re ready to get your A/C going.

Tips to Easily Clean Your Windows

Regular window cleaning does more than just make your windows look nice.  Clean windows let in more light than dirty ones, and if you love sunshine, give those windows special attention! Studies have shown there are health benefits to being surrounded with natural light.  And the more you can illuminate the inside of your home with sunshine, the fewer lights you’ll need on (which means lower electrical bills).  And clean windows – especially when you get the grime out of the tracks – are easier to operate.

Check out our previous post on how to do it easily. The best time to do it is on an overcast day. And by the way, if your windows don’t tilt in to be able to clean the exteriors from inside, it might be time to replace those old windows with ones that do.  Make this the last year you have to get out a ladder and drag a bucket of soapy water around outside!

While you’re cleaning your windows,  it’s a good time to check for air leaks as well as things like failed caulking or other needed repairs.

  • Open and close each window.  Are they easy to operate?  If not, make a note.  Also check the hardware, particularly the locks.
  • Are there cloudy areas on the glass that cleaning won’t eliminate?  It could be etching from a number of causes.  Low-e coating on older windows can fail, which might appear to be scratches.  Make a note of those as well.  On older double or triple-pane glass, cloudy areas are often between the glass, and that can’t be fixed.  The cause most often is a failed seal, and the only way to deal with that is replace the window.

Now that it’s fresh air season you want those windows open!  If you find any problems with yours, please give us a call.  We can evaluate your windows and make recommendations for repairs and/or replacement.  Reach out to us today!
