Affordable MN Home Improvement Projects to Help You Along

Everyone that owns a home has some dreams and plans for it.  If you own a home in the Minneapolis St. Paul MN area, the warm weather may have you in the mood for remodeling, big or small. Some of the projects should be left for professionals to do, or perhaps you don’t have the budget for the big ticket items, but there are smaller projects that can be done to freshen up your home and change things a bit.  Here are some of the more economical ideas:

  • The kitchen may be your first stop – this is where most people spend a lot of their time, and it usually the first place inside the home that gets noticed. The least expensive way to change your kitchen and make it feel and look like a new kitchen is simply by organizing things and making sure that they are in great places.  Perhaps some with some reorganization or cabinet inserts you can shift countertop items to lower cabinets, or mount them under upper cabinets.  Just having more open counter space can make the kitchen that much different.
  • Crown molding and baseboards are simple and easy to replace, and they can make a huge differences. Think about changing the look, perhaps adding a new coat of color and then adding these to the mix.  If you’re not quite ready for new replacement windows, adding some crown molding or different to your existing windows can improve their look.  (Hint:  Check out our Pinterest board on window trim for some ideas.)
  • The lighting can set the mood, which is what a lot of people already know but if you don’t, change it now! Think about adding a dimmer to the rooms throughout the home so you can have bright or dim light depending on what it is that you want to do in the room, how you want the room to look and the general feeling that you would like while in the room.
  • Change the entryway to the home. This can be simply adding a new front door that matches well with the outside of the home. It can change the appearance of the home entirely, just this one change. It is also affordable and you have many choices to pick from. Fiberglass is a popular choice for a front door.  In addition to replacing your front door, consider such things as new exterior and interior lighting or a fresh coat of bright paint on your door.  You can also add such things as decorative house numbers or a brass kick plate and matching door hardware.
  • How about some landscaping? This can change the appearance of the home on the outside, and it can make a big difference on the appeal of your home. If you’ve got areas around the outside of your home thatt you would rather look at, it might be time to spruce it up a bit.  A flower-covered trellis might be just the thing to conceal that ugly air conditioner unit.

One of the most economical yet sound investments you can make in your home is to replace your front door.  In terms of increased value, quality entry doors remain at the top of the list.
