All The Vitals of Basic Window Styles

Time for new windows?

When replacing or upgrading the windows in your home, you will want to stick to windows that suit your home’s style. With so many different styles out there, making the decision on what style to choose can be slightly overwhelming. Here are some basic window styles with all that you need to know about them.

Double-hung windows are the most popular window used today in the United States. Both sashes on these types of windows open up or down; with a single hung window only the bottom sash will open (many older or historic homes will have single hungs). Your window screen is usually mounted on the outside of the window and when the window is open, the sash will cover half the window opening. This style of window is best for traditional style houses.

Casement Windows

Casement windows are best for keeping out all types of weather, and they are more energy-efficient than double-hung windows. These windows have a sash that is hinged, andit  swings out like a door when opened by hand or using a crank. Casement windows can be damaged, however, if left open during a bad wind storm or a rainstorm. This style of window is ideal on contemporary or prairie-style homes.

Slider or Sliding Windows

Window companies refer to them variously as sliders or sliding windows, but they’re the same.  A slider window is basically a double-hung, but installed on it’s side. The sashes glide on a track instead of having to be lifted open like the double-hung. To keep the window moving properly though, the bottom track requires cleaning frequently. This style, too, will work on contemporary house designs.

Awning or Hopper Windows

This style window is just like a casement window, but mounted on its side. Unlike the casement window, you can leave these styles open when it rains without the threat of damage. The awning window style swings outside your home with the screen mounted on the inside of the window. The hopper style opens within your home and the screen is mounted on the outside of the window. These are perfect for traditional or modern style houses, and and they are a great option for basements that don’t have much room for a long window.

Tilt-Turn

Tilt-turn or pivot windows are the most expensive type of window style available, and most commonly used in Europe. This style of window operates on special hardware that allows you to open it like a hopper window or pivot it in like a door, depending on how you open the latch. The screen mounts on the inside of these windows, and they do a great job of sealing out the weather as well.

Fixed Windows

These types of windows do not open, making them the most energy-efficient type of window. These are best as architectural accents.  They can also be combined with operable windows or installed over a door to provide more light.  A picture window is a type of fixed window.
