Are Replacement Windows for Old Minnesota Homes a Good Idea?

Replacing older windows is something that is usually recommended, but what happens when the home is a historic one here in Minnesota?

There are quite a few historic districts around the St. Paul and Minneapolis area and other communities we serve such as Stillwater, Farmington, and Fairbault.  And even if a home isn’t in a designated preservation locale, if it’s an older one, maintaining as much of the original characteristics as possible is important for most owners.

So, when it comes time to deal with the windows (usually because of high energy costs or damage), what do you do? Do you replace them or restore/repair them? And are there other options available? You want to make sure that replacing the windows is actually what should be done for the home that you’re remodeling.

It might surprise you to know that even though the main business of our company is installing replacement windows, we usually don’t recommend that for homes having those gorgeous (though energy-wasting) original wood windows. Our solution is usually a high-quality storm window like those made by Mon-Ray. But we know at times the best solution is to replace those old windows.

Some people like to restore those old windows because they truly love them and want them to look their best inside the home. Replacing or restoring are the options and depending on the current condition of the windows; one might be better suited for them over the other.

Replacement Windows for Historic Homes

Some of the suppliers we work with manufacture replacement windows that are designed to be historically accurate in appearance and detail. Many replacement windows are made for historic homes. They go well with the architectural theme of the house, while also providing energy efficiency those old windows can’t match.  You can choose from a variety of frame finishes so that you’re easily able to enjoy all that comes from matching the look and feel of the older windows you loved so much.

Maintain the Character of Your Home with Replacement Windows

Even new replacement windows can help you maintain the character of the historic home that you live in. By replicating the ones that were there, you’re essentially having the same look and feel that comes from them but in a more energy efficient window choice.

You want a window choice that is going to honor the older home’s quality and look. With every replacement that is made inside the home, the windows are something you cannot sacrifice quality for. They are something that really makes the home stand out and without the right ones, the whole look and feel of the home are going to change.

Take a second to look at what Window Outfitters can do for your historic home. We have the products and installation expertise to provide the right replacement windows for your historic home. We’d be happy to evaluate the state of your current windows and offer solutions that meet your modern needs and still preserve the historic character of your home.
