Avoiding Frosty Windows in Your Minnesota Home

With the cold temps we’ve been having in the Twin Cities metro, window condensation seems to be common.  Condensation might not look all that great on the windows of a home, but when it comes to knowing what to do with it, then many homeowners are lost.

There are several causes of condensation on window glass in the winter, and finding out which one is causing yours can help you minimize it happening on the windows in your home.

Why Is There Condensation on My Windows in the Winter?

Windows Are Not Properly Sealed

A common cause of condensation is that windows might not be sealed properly.  There is air leakage that makes the interior side of the glass cold.  The moisture inside the home and the outside temperatures meet together at the glass of the window creating the condensation that you see. This can lead to damaged frames or sills or trim around the windows if any of it is wood.

Poor Window Quality and/or Improper Installation

The quality of the windows might have a lot to do with it; installation techniques can affect it as well.  Poor weatherstripping and lack of insulation can cause the window to have a lot of condensation getting built up, both on the room side of the glass or between the panes.   Having all of this cold air coming into your Minnesota home should be the last of your worries. This can also become expensive – check your energy bill!

Of course, often the problem is not in the window itself; the culprit is too much humidity in your home.  We want to be comfortable indoors in the winter, and having a furnace running dries out the air.  But because the house is shut up, there isn’t enough circulation with outdoor air to move that moist air out, so it builds up on cooler surfaces.

So how do you cut down on window condensation this winter?

Control the humidity inside the home, weatherize your windows, and make sure to properly ventilate and insulate the necessary areas of the house. This is going to make sure to give you the comfortable atmosphere that is needed within the house without the condensation that can cause further problems for you.

It May Be Time to Consider Window Replacements

Does condensation mean your windows need replacing?  Maybe. It is important to consider the age of the windows, the quality, and how well they are performing. If they are not up to passing the test, then you might find that you need to replace them.  We would be happy to come out and evaluate the performance of your windows and let you know whether it’s the window or something else.
