Casement Windows a Great Solution for Drafty St.Paul Homes

It’s hard to think about getting your home ready for winter during these warm summer days, but the truth is that those severe blowing storms and subzero temperatures aren’t far off.  Is your home ready for this winter’s cold blasts?  If your rooms are drafty and uncomfortable in the winter, the culprit could be  your old windows.

Most older homes were constructed using wood-frame windows.  Wood has an unsurpassed natural beauty, but wood is also subject to deterioration from temperature, moisture, insect damage, and other factors.  Wood shrinks and warps over time, resulting in window frames that fit loosely within the wall openings.   This means frequent recaulking (because caulk also deteriorates from some of the same factors).  All this adds up to a lot of maintenance, plus drafty rooms.  And if your rooms are drafty, that means you are losing heating and cooling, and your energy costs are higher than they need to be.

The solution?  Modern replacement windows.  Whether you choose aluminum, vinyl, fiberglass, or even high-tech wood frame windows, you can reduce maintenance chores, cut your energy bills, and bring comfort to your rooms by eliminating those annoying drafts.    With replacement windows you have many window styles available, and with the custom options offered by most window companies, your design options are almost limitless.  But if your main concern is eliminating drafts, the window style the out-performs all the others is the casement window.

Traditional single- and double-hung windows–as well as sliders–have  moveable sections which meet when the window is closed.  But that juncture point is also a point for air infiltration.  Casement windows crank in and out, and the window sections fit tightly against the frame.  This same design also allows the open window to catch breezes and direct it into your home.  And with casements, the entire window opening is usable, unlike single- or double-hung windows, where only half the window opening permits ventilation.  And a great security feature of casements – they are much harder to break into than double- or single-hung windows.

All these features combine to make casement windows a great overall solution for your St. Paul area home.  If you want to eliminate drafts, cut your energy bills, and reduce your window maintenance chores, contact Window Outfitters today for a free estimate.  We’re the leading replacement window company in the Minneapolis/St. Paul area, and we specialize in helping home owners like you find just the right window solutions for their homes.
