How to Choose the Right Siding Color

We’ve been hearing from homeowners around the Minneapolis area who plan on having new siding installed this spring.  Of course, a major consideration when you’re selecting siding is the color.

Just as choosing the type of house you want is a major decision, so is picking out the color of your siding when it comes time to make a replacement. That’s why you must take the time to consider all the different factors that should go into picking out the right kind of siding. There are several considerations that you must make, and here’s a brief overview of the most important ones that you should be keeping in mind when making your decision or you can ask a Minneapolis siding contractor for an opinion.

Tips for Choosing Siding Color

  • Blending in with the Neighborhood:  While it is okay to have a home that’s different from your neighbors’, you don’t want a house that looks funny compared to all the rest. If the other homes tend to be conservative or neutral colors, it’s no good going with bright colors that will stand out and look odd in comparison. At the same time, a bright neighborhood would make a neutral home look uninteresting.
  • Local Climate:  The climate that you live in should also dictate your home’s color. Bright, sunny locations tend to help make more vividly colored homes look nicer. If you are planning a siding option, brighter colors work best if you live down south, or in an area that gets plenty of sunlight throughout the year. If you live in a gloomy location, a more neutral color will probably work better.
  • Matching the Roof:  The roof of your home is one of the other major design elements, and you have to work with the color that it is. If it’s neutral, you are free to choose just about any shade that you would like. If your roof is lighter, you’ll want a slightly deeper hue siding option; if it’s darker in color, a lighter option would be best to help bring some contrast to your home.
  • Blending with Architecture:  Finally, you have to think about the architectural style of your home. A more traditional styled house looks best in a single color and more neutral tones. A newer or more sleek style such as a cottage style home could pull off bright colors as well. Don’t forget to coordinate it with the trim, as well!

There is a lot that goes into picking out the color of the siding on your home. Think about all these things before you make your final decision, but also make sure it’s something that you really like and that you’ll be happy to live with for the life of your home. It’s a pretty major decision. Always make sure your siding is installed by a qualified Minneapolis siding contractor such as Window Outfitters.  We offer a variety of quality siding products, including Craneboard insulated vinyl siding and fiber cement siding and trim products from The James Hardie Company.
