More on Choosing the Best St. Paul Replacement Windows

In an earlier post we discussed questions you should ask yourself when evaluating what the best replacement windows would be for your St. Paul home.  After you’ve looked at climate factors like the usual weather in your neighborhood and the position of your home, take a look at these questions as well.

Evaluating the Best Replacement Windows for Minnesota

How Will You Use the Windows?

You should have a clear idea what you’re looking for window function. The reason for getting the window is going to help determine which window styles you choose to put in your home. And that’s going to vary from room to room.  There is no hard and fast rule that you have to put the same type and style window throughout your home.  Here are just two examples of function.

  • Do you want more light? Some windows have thinner frames, which allows more light in the same size opening.  Other windows such as garden windows and bay or bow windows maximize the light coming in because they bring it in on 3 or more sides.
  • Would you like to open them up and allow fresh air to come in?  Then fixed windows like picture or transom aren’t going to work.  On the other hand, you can maximize fresh air flow with casement windows.  And awning windows will let you have air coming in even if it’s raining.

What’s the Popular Window Style for the Area You Live In?

The local style may also affect what you put in your home. Do you want to blend in with the other homes around you?  Then it would be wise to select a window style that’s most common.  On the other hand, if you’d like your home to stand out, choose something different.  For example, the current trend in windows is for the sleek, modern look with black frames.  If your desire is to update your home, those might be the best windows for you.

What Windows Go Well with the Style of Your Home?

You want to also consider the style home you have before having your windows replaced.  Modern style windows may look out of place on a traditional Cape Cod home.  On the other hand, if you’ve got an ultra-modern style home, traditional double-hung windows with grids is probably not what you want.  This point is especially important if you live in an historic district, where there are regulations as to what you can put on the exterior of your home.  (We specialize in replacement windows and doors for historic homes, so we can definitely help you choose the right windows if this affects you.)
