Cleaning Tips for Windows and Doors

Whether window and door cleaning is on your regular spring maintenance list, or it’s something you tend to year-round, here are some tips.  Since sunlight is less intense in the winter, some homeowners like to maximize the light through their windows by doing a thorough cleaning in the fall.  If you own newer replacement windows, the task is much easier because you most likely can take care of washing them from the inside of your home.

  • If your windows tilt in (as most replacements do), be sure to lift the window up before tilting it inward.  Make sure the window is entirely inside the house before lowering it as far as it will go.  Trying to balance it on your knees is awkward, and you can’t hold it level with your knees, so it is off balance and puts pressure in the wrong place.  This is the most common cause of window glass breaking during cleaning.  If you hire a professional window cleaner, instruct them to handle your windows this way.
  • One of the best window-cleaning products (and about the cheapest, too) is a 50/50 solution of water and white vinegar, used with crumpled newspapers.  Since the ink from the paper will come off on your hands, you may want to wear gloves if you choose this method.  Believe it or not, this works exceptionally well on the grimiest of windows.
  • You may want to apply a coat of UV-inhibitor to the exterior of your entry doors.  This is something that should be reapplied annually.  UV-inhibitors will help to keep the finish from fading and preserve the finish warranty.  If you have any questions about your door warranty, check the manufacturer’s site online.
  • If the sills on your windows and doors aren’t sloped, the weep holes should be cleaned out regularly, even if you’re not doing a thorough window cleaning.  Clogged weep holes can cause moisture to be trapped, leading to mold development or water damage.

Cleaning your windows and doors doesn’t have to be a major chore, but it is something that should be done regularly.  If you have any questions about window and door maintenance, contact the professionals at Window Outfitters, Inc.  Serving the entire Minneapolis/St. Paul metro area.
