Common Causes of Popping Noises After Window Installation

New windows are great, but during Minnesota spring, the sharp turn in temperature from cool nights to hot days may cause strange popping sounds after they’re installed. Common reasons stem from your home’s siding or the windows themselves.

Siding
If you have aluminum siding, it may be the cause of popping, especially if you’ve just installed windows with low-E coating.  This coating generates a focused reflection of sunlight, which heats the siding quickly, causing it to expand. Short of replacing the siding, this can be solved by either shading the windows or replacing the windows with uncoated glass.

Vinyl siding can also be a culprit. If the nails are driven in too hard, the siding will be installed too tightly against the home, and the change in temperature causes it to expand and contract. The only way to solve this problem is to reinstall the siding properly.

Another way vinyl siding can cause popping is when the locking joints in new siding reacts to changes in temperature. This problem should work itself out in a few months, but if it doesn’t, contact your contractor to discuss options.

Windows
If your windows have aluminum frames, they may be reacting in the same way as aluminum siding does. Although frames are less likely to pop when temperatures change, it is still a possibility. Aluminum in the trim could also be at fault.

If the window frames aren’t installed properly, it’s possible that they’re expanding and contracting, as well. This may force them to bend inward, and cause damage. The best way to correct this issue is to reinstall the windows correctly.

Strange noises may be common in many homes, but although some may be signs of settling, they could also indicate a problem that needs to be fixed. Once you figure out the cause, you’ll be able to come up with a cure.
