What Are Common MN Siding Issues?

Now that spring is just about here in the Twin Cities, homeowners all around the Minneapolis and St. Paul area are getting outdoors and checking to see how their homes have held up over the winter.  We’ve already heard from some of you whose siding needs to be replaced.  If you haven’t checked out your siding to see what shape it is in, we recommend you give it a look-over as you’re doing your outside spring chores.  Different problems can happen with siding.  It is important that you check into these siding issues before anything happens that cannot be reversed or easily repaired. Spending more money is not the common goal that everyone is trying to obtain here. It is more about repairing and ensuring that what you have is doing the job it was meant to do.

If your siding needs to be replaced, there are plenty of signs that show that. By checking the condition of your siding from time to time, and testing it to see if it is holding up, you can be confident your home is well protected. Storms may come and go, but your siding should remain the same no matter how hard Mother Nature hits.

Warping in Vinyl Siding:  Vinyl siding needs room to breathe, to expand and contract when the temperatures change. Without enough room for expansion, the vinyl planks can warp. This warping can bend entire sections of siding and restrict the ability of the siding to protect your home since it’s not laying flat against the structure the way it is intended to.

Noise Can Mean There’s a Problem With Your Siding Installation:  Loud screeching or scraping might be heard during a storm outside. This can be due to siding that has not been installed correctly; sections may be rubbing together or against the underlying structure. This can not only be annoying, but it means that the home you’re living in is not well protected since your siding is flapping in the wind.

Moisture Getting Behind the Siding:  Cracks, warping, and other problems with siding could mean that water is getting behind it.  Moisture is able to cause many problems, not only on the exterior structure of your home but inside as well.  When you let water seep into your home you’re inviting a wide variety of pests, mold and mildew to the inside. You can also be allowing the water to get into the basement, where even more damage can occur.  Mold is a serious health issue as well as a structural threat, so this is something that shouldn’t be ignored.
