Comparing Bow Windows vs. Bay Windows

If you’re searching for a distinctive appearance for your home, few window styles provide that look like bay or bow windows.

bow-window-bay-windowMost people use the terms interchangeably, and with good reason.  When looking at a bay and bow window, they probably look the same. Both of them protrude from the houses exterior, they both let large amounts of sunlight through, and both make rooms look bigger. However, when looking closer you will see there are differences between a bow window and bay window.

Bay Windows Explained

Bay windows are a set of 3 windows, angled out away from your house. The window in the center is typically a picture window that is fixed, and is approximately 50% larger than both the windows on the sides (flankers).

The shape of a bay window can be octagonal, hexagonal, or square, and gives extended views, a large amount of natural light, and extra space for storage or seating. Majority of homeowners have crank windows or double-hung windows installed as the flankers for opening and closing to get ventilation.

Depending on the window you choose, the average cost is $3,500 with installation to replace your home’s standard window with a new bay window. In the majority of situations, to accommodate the bay window the opening needs to be at least a width of 40 inches. If the opening needs to be enlarged, it can range anywhere from $4,000-$7,000.

Bow Windows Explained

Bow windows are a set of 4-6 windows, projecting outward from your houses exterior, but every window is sized the same. These windows give an appearance of a curve more than the bay window does, and they are more symmetrical. Due to more panes of glass than bay windows have, they tend to let more light inside a room.  And since they curve outward, homeowners can have a viewpoint that is unique.  For a majority of situations, the recommended window opening with should be at least 80 inches for the installation of a bow window.

Which window style will work the best in your home?  The design structure of your home may be what decides whether to choose a bay or bow window configuration.

Another consideration is cost.  Due to bow windows having more glass than bay windows and covering a space that is larger, it generally costs more for a bow window. Installing one can begin at $5,000 but go as much as $12,000, depending on the complexity and size of the job.
