Comparing Vinyl and Fiberglass Replacement Windows for Minneapolis Homes

The most popular windows with our customers are the ones that are those that require no exterior maintenance.   These include vinyl, wood-clad, and fiberglass.  In this post we’ll compare the two most popular, vinyl and fiberglass windows.

Vinyl vs. Fiberglass Replacement Windows

Vinyl and fiberglass replacement windows share some characteristics, mainly that they require very little in the way of maintenance other than washing.  No regular repainting or re-staining like wood windows need.  Both types of window frames are available in the same styles.  But here are the main differences:

• Fiberglass window frames are stronger, more durable, and more energy efficient than vinyl window frames.  Many homeowners prefer them because their frames are slimmer, meaning they let in more light in the same size opening.  However, they are more expensive.  But in the long run they may turn out to be a better financial choice.  Expected life span is 30-40 years. 
• Vinyl windows do hold up well in our climate.  They generally have more color options available than fiberglass window frames.  They are more economically priced and are easier to install.  But the expected life of a quality vinyl window is between 15-20 years, about half that of a comparable fiberglass window.

So, which window frame is best for your Minneapolis home?  That depends on a number of factors.  Of course, you should choose the highest quality windows your budget permits.  Another thing to keep in mind is how long you plan on staying in your home.  If you foresee selling it in less than 20 years, vinyl windows might be the way to go.  On the other hand, if this is your ‘forever home,’ we definitely would recommend fiberglass windows.
