Contemporary Window Styles for Contemporary Home Designs

Would you consider your home to be contemporary?

2015-10-14_1116“Contemporary” is a wide term used for a variety of designs, but contemporary home characteristics are generally open floor plans, tall expansive windows, and an emphasis on lighting that is natural. Roofs are mostly flat, or else they have ceilings with exposed beams. Most of all, contemporary design is about clean lines.

There are many types of homes that fall in this term. Below is an explanation of four popular kinds of contemporary home designs. (images courtesy of Andersen windows)

Contemporary Home Designs and Matching Window Styles

Eclectic Style
This style does not come from any era of time in particular; instead it borrows from several historical eras. A wide assortment of architectural trends are utilized, while combining modern influence and materials. Eclectic style home design is the most popular currently in the U.S.

Mix and match is the theme, and for this home a variety of window styles works well, especially custom shape windows, since the eclectic style is about personal expression.

Modern Style
Modern has wide variety of meanings; however, on its basic level, it is a movement away from designs that are traditional. Modern style homes include expansive windows which are large (without grilles) to maximize light and bring attention to details on the interior.  Floor-to-ceiling windows are often used.

There is focus on minimizing design by removing most, or in some cases all, non-functional decoration in traditional architecture that is common. Slider windows work well because they have a minimum of hardware.  Casements are also popular.

Another design in this category which is popular is asymmetrical, which brings more attention to other areas of the house.

Prairie Style
These homes have interior spaces which are open with large windows intended for the interior of the home to be connected with its natural surroundings. These homes are known to be in harmony with nature and humanity due to architect Frank Lloyd Wright designing of these types of structures.

Windows for prairie style homes often include art glass and grids, or decorative transom windows over operational windows.  At left is an example of a prairie home with window and door details.

Art Deco Style
Homes built between 1925-1940 are often art deco.  This style home has a focus on geometrical shapes, streamlined appearance, and clean lines. Art Deco is very similar to prairie home design.  Homes with art deco style usually have corners which are rounded, smooth walls, and low shapes which are horizontal. Doors and windows installed are typically flush to surfaces of walls and don’t include window sills. Casement windows are popular, although any style can be used in art deco style design.  Decorative or opaque glass as well as glass block windows are common in these homes.
