Greenhouse Windows – Decorating Doesn’t Have to Be a Challenge

If you’ve replaced (or are thinking about replacing) one of your existing windows with a garden window – also called a greenhouse window – you may be somewhat hesitant about decorating it.  Obviously traditional window treatments such as blinds and drapes won’t work, but here are some tips that can help you accent this unique window.

Garden windows act as mini-greenhouses, and so they have a functional aspect; but that doesn’t mean they have to be boring.  Be creative in the containers you use for your plants – look for ceramics or decorated pots that reflect the colors in your room.  This is also a great place for a pop of color – perhaps choose some bright colored pots as a contrast to the color of your room.  If you have blooming plants in your window, however, you’ll want to choose colors that don’t clash with your flowers.  Metallic pots are also popular – don’t be afraid to mix metals; everything doesn’t have to match.

As you’re decorating, don’t limit your choices to plants and pots.  You can also add small accents such as framed photos, figurines, etc.  Choose items that are appropriate for the room.  The window shown here is in a kitchen – note the cookbook used as decor.

While you can’t use regular draperies, a small valance can finish off the window and tie it in to the other windows in your room if you use the same fabric as your other window treatments. Mount a cafe rod slightly above the top of the window; make sure your valance is short enough that it doesn’t obsure the plants on the top shelf.  Keep in mind that this unique window style may also be able to stand alone without any fabric accent, even if the other windows in your room have drapes or valances.

To achieve an overall balance, put larger pots and taller plants on the bottom shelf, with smaller plants on the very top.  You can also tuck small pots in among the larger ones – just make sure they are in front.

When choosing which plants to place in your window, keep in mind that they will be exposed to light almost the entire day, so select those rated for full or partial sun.  Shade plants will not do well in a greenhouse window.

Finally, a greenhouse window in your kitchen is a great place for a mini-kitchen garden.  Pot herbs you regularly use, as well as salad greens.

Garden windows are a great way to bring in more light as well as green things into your home.  They can be a refreshing touch in the middle of the winter – you’ll have space for year-round gardening.  If you have questions about installing a garden window in your home, contact the replacement window experts at Window Outfitters.
