Deteriorating Doors and Windows Mean You’re Getting Uninvited (and Unwelcome) Guests in Your Home – and Paying More for Energy

New windows and doors are the most noticeable improvements you can make to the exterior of your home.  But worn-out doors and windows do more than detract from your home’s appearance.  If they are cracked, warped,  or don’t seal tightly, you’re probably spending more on heating and cooling than you should.

There have been huge changes to this industry in recent years, changes that make doors and windows extremely energy efficient in ways that will reduce the air exchange, and prevent the harmful UV rays from damaging your interior. Any door or window that has been damaged should certainly be replaced, but even if yours are simply older and in need of repair, this should be addressed, too.

Homes with outdated windows and doors will admit unwelcome temperatures, insects, and other uninvited guests into your home. Older windows typically don’t drain well either, as years of painting and caulking have closed the weeping holes built into them. When this happens, water backs up, and will begin to rot the structure of your home, and grow mold and fungus.  Another sign of a window in need of replacement will include double paned glass that has ‘fog’ in the middle. This shows how the thermal seal has become compromised and is allowing moisture to get in between them. Replacement is certain with this type of condition, and should be taken care of as soon as possible.  Untreated mold poses a substantial health risk.

If you’re handy and enjoy do-it-yourself home repair projects, you may decide to handle replacing your own windows and doors.  But check with the manufacturer’s requirements first; some window and door companies require professional installation for the warranty to be valid.  To find out more, contact Window Outfitters in Minneapolis today. 952-746-6661
