Did the Latest Storm to Hit Minneapolis Make Your Home Leak?

The storms that we have had recently completely did a number on so many homes throughout the Minneapolis and St. Paul area, as well as other communities around the state.  With news photos of Flood2flooding in the streets in Roseville and Minneapolis, it’s obvious a lot of rain came down.  (The photo at right was tweeted by a Columbia Heights resident.)

With this happening, it was something that perhaps made a lot of homes leak.  (Now, we’re not talking about basement flooding – that’s an entirely different issue.  This post is about water coming in around windows and doors or through the roof.)

Why the leaking? What was it caused by and what needs to be done regarding it? We’ve heard from many people who have had questions about whether or not the leaking in their homes was something they should be concerned with.

When Water Leaking Isn’t a Problem

After a heavy storm, it is not uncommon to see condensation and other moisture issues around windows. Water might even drip down from the sides. This is just something that happens in heavy wind-blow rains, and it is not anything that you have to worry about if your windows are newer and in great shape. You do want to wipe them down though, and then open them up when the sun comes back out to completely dry the cracks and creases.

However, if your windows are older and worn or warped, then this moisture inside them could be due to things like failed seals or poor fit. Old windows may not fit well within their openings anymore, and their parts could be worn out, which means it might be time to take the plunge and consider replacing them entirely.

Leaking Could Be Signs of a Big Problem

When water leaking into your home becomes too much, is coming from the walls or the roof?  This is when you need to call in professional help. There may be a hole in your roof, you might be missing shingles or you might even have a piece of your siding that is undone. These have to all be repaired before the issue becomes worse and the moisture seeps into the foundation of the home or causes rot and mold in the structure.
