Differences Between Casement and Sliding Windows

Quality replacement windows can make your home more energy-efficient while at the same time improving its appearance. This means warmer indoor temperature in winter and cooler in summer and lower utility bills for you.

Replacement windows can be installed into existing window openings. and you’ve got quite a variety to choose from.

Casement windows and sliding windows are both excellent options for every home. However, these two windows do have a few differences between them. Here are a couple differences in the options between these two styles:

Casement vs. Slider Windows

Differences Physically:  Your window’s opening dimensions have an influence when choosing replacement windows for your home.

  • For openings that are shorter than they are wider, slider windows are usually used. These open sideways, with one pane sliding over the other.
  • Openings that are narrow and tall often choose casement windows (also known as crank windows). The side of the window frame is where the window is attached and they swing outwards by use of a handle, lever, or crank.

Ventilation Patterns:  How a window is built dictates how air flows through its openings. Air can flow through the entire opening of a casement window due to its ability to open up completely. Sliding windows allow for less ventilation since only half the window area is open. There are however several different options for sliding windows that will allow for more ventilation. Talk to a professional replacement window company about all the choices.

Energy Efficiency:  Both replacement casement and sliding windows are energy efficient; however the two do have a difference. With sliding windows, seals must be flexible for the allowance of opening and closing them. On the other hand, the seal is not flexible on casement windows. Even though they are both energy efficient, because casement window’s seal design is not flexible, they are generally more efficient.

What to Look for in Quality Casement or Slider Windows

When choosing casement windows, be sure they have reinforced sashes and a fully-reinforced frame. This helps them from distorting over time.

With slider windows, look for ones with dual rollers, reinforced sashes, and fully integrated lift rails to making them easy to open.
