Do I Need to Replace the Windows in My St. Paul Home with the Same Style?

We get asked this question often.  A common misconception when we meet with homeowners in the St. Paul area about replacement windows is that they need to choose the same style as their existing windows.  The answer – with very few exceptions – is no, you don’t.  You don’t even have to choose windows of the same size.

Now, that being said, there are times that you need to stay with the same window style.  It may be your homeowners’ association (HOA) does not allow for changes to an exterior.  Or perhaps your home is in an historic district and you’re limited to historically accurate windows.  But even in these cases there are often exceptions.

Shown here are some basic window styles from ProVia, one of our favorite window companies.  These are offered by most of the major window manufacturers we work with.  Additionally, there are specialty shape windows such as oval, round, half circle, and more. For the most part, you’re only limited by your imagination – and factors such as your budget and your home’s design.

Why You Might Want to Choose a Different Window Style

There are a number of reasons why a homeowner might want to consider windows of a different style than the existing ones.  Most older homes in our area were built with the traditional double-hung windows.  And while that style is still popular, other window styles have been introduced that may be more energy efficient or easier to operate.  Or it may be that you’re looking to update the look of your home and want something with a more modern appearance.  Any of these reasons is valid for changing window styles.

And you don’t even have to use the same style for all the windows in your home.  There may be situations where one style window is more appropriate than another.  For example, over a kitchen sink you’d want an easy-to-operate window such as a casement.  A casement window cranks out rather than you having to reach over a sink to push it open.  But there may be spots in your home where it’s not feasible to have window panes sticking out, such as where your landscaping is right next to the house, or a sidewalk passes close by the window.  In those cases double-hung or even glider windows might be a better choice.

Whatever your home’s existing windows look like, we can help you choose just the right style to meet your replacement window goals.  Why not bring us your ideas and your questions and we’ll see what solutions we can come up with?  We’d be happy to meet with you in your home or at our showroom in Savage.  Just contact us to make an appointment.
