Do You Know the Signs that Say It’s Time to Replace Your Windows in Minneapolis?

Other than remodeling or wanting to increase the energy efficiency of a home, there are a number of other reasons that homeowners choose to replace their existing windows.  But sometimes that choice is made for you because of issues with the windows themselves.  As a licensed Minnesota window replacement company serving the Twin Cities, we wanted people to be aware of these indications.

Seeing These Signs?  Time for Replacement Windows

This time of year one of the most frequent calls we get is about window condensation.  Many homeowners erroneously assume there is something wrong with their windows. Most often that’s not the case; the cause is usually too much humidity inside a home during cold weather.  (You can get the basics on what causes window condensation and how to reduce it by checking out this post.)

Wouldn’t it be nice if windows came with some sort of indicator that they have gone bad?  It’s not that easy, but if you pay attention to your windows, you will see some warning signs.

  • Water stains (not from condensation):  Water stains on a window frame are often indicators that moisture is leaking in. And if water is getting in around your windows, so is air.  You may have failed seals, but there are a number of other causes, most of which mean it’s time for a new window.
  • Moisture or condensation between the glass panes:  Condensation on the interior is one thing, but when it forms between the panes of glass, this is a sign your window is failing and needs to be replaced.  If the water is allowed to accumulate, you could end up with mold or damage to the walls or framing surrounding the window.
  • Rotting wood: Real wood windows, while beautiful, are difficult to maintain here in Minnesota.  Our weather is hard on them, and unless they have clad exteriors, they require lots of upkeep.  Once the wood starts to rot, though, there isn’t much you can do except take them out and put new ones in before you’ve got problems with structural damage to your home.
  • Operation issues:  If your windows are hard to open or shut – or won’t stay open – that’s another sign you’re due for a replacement.
  • Breakage:  Besides keeping the outside elements from getting into your home, windows also help to keep intruders out.  Broken windows are like open doors and need to be closed up as quickly as possible.  Sometimes it’s just the glass that needs replacement, but if the frame itself is broken, time for a new window.

If you have questions about the state of your windows and whether or not it’s time to replace them, we would be happy to come out and give you an evaluation, along with our recommendations.  Our consultations are no-cost and without obligation.  Please let us know if we can help.  You can either call one of our Twin Cities numbers above or use our handy online contact form
