Drafty Windows and Making it Through the Winter

ice-55457_640There is still some time left in the winter here in Minneapolis, and you want to make it comfortably through to the spring.  One thing many homeowners who have older windows deal with during the winter is drafts.  You may be thinking about having new energy-efficient windows you’ve always wanted installed when the weather warms up. Of course you want to save money and not worry about heating the outside when the snow is falling. But what can you do in the meantime?  Cutting down on the drafts and minimizing the heat loss can be done when you look into some of these tips that can be used to get you by to the end of the winter and into the spring when the new windows can be installed in your home.

  • Caulk around the outside of the window frame. You want to close up any gaps or openings between the window and the panes of glass.  Those gaps are the main cause of drafts. By closing the gap between the two, you keep your heat in and the cold out.
  • Thick shades can block out the cold.  They come in many different colors, styles and sizes so you can fit them on the windows that you have.  But this is an option only at night, because they’ll block out the sunlight and the view as well.
  • Weatherstripping is an ideal way to temporarily stop the drafts. It is also an easy, inexpensive way instead of caulking.  Caulking can be difficult to remove, while weatherstripping can be pulled up if needed and doesn’t block the windows.
  • Curtains come in many different thicknesses so you can block out winter. When your windows are not able to hold back the cold, you want to keep it out somehow, and this might be the best way to go about it.  Insulated or thermal drapes can make your rooms more comfortable at night.

Even if you’ve got drafts, try to keep the thermostat on a lower yet comfortable temperature because making the furnace work a lot can cost a lot of money in your energy bill. You’re trying to save this extra cash, not burn it all up on heating.  And when you’re ready to have your new windows installed, make sure to give us a call here at Window Outfitters. We are THE replacement window installation contractor that is able to get the new windows in, and the old windows out so you can save some cash in the process.  We are a licensed MN replacement window contractor, and we serve the entire Minneapolis and St. Paul metro area with a variety of exterior home remodeling services.
