Factors that Weigh in When You’re Choosing Replacement Windows

With the almost limitless kinds of products for home remodeling being sold today, the task of choosing new windows for your home may be intimidating. We understand what homeowners face when confronted with this decision, however. As a replacement window company in the Minneapolis area, we have extensive experience in this industry. We know each homeowner is different when it comes to budget, priorities, and requirement considerations.

You might be asking, “How do I choose the type of replacement window that will be ideal for my home?” Here are some suggestions that are practical and should help make your choice easier.

Window Security and Safety:  A great choice for windows on the first floor are casement windows with security glass. Once these windows are locked, prying them open is difficult, unlike double-hung windows. This can bring your home safety against intruders.

Bedroom windows however, need to allow easy exit in case of emergencies. Windows that slide horizontally allows this. Slider windows are similiar to casements in terms of being difficult to force open.  Be sure to discuss issues of bedroom egress with your window contractor to ensure they are safe and and to verify there is no building code violation.

Privacy Concerns:  Parts of the home that need privacy (example: bathrooms) use obscure glass in the windows. Most likely curtains and blinds will not be needed, thus saving money. To receive generous light in the bedroom while keeping privacy, skylights placed strategically are a nice choice.  Also, fixed windows installed above the line of sight also can provide light but enhance privacy.

Outside Noise: For homes with constant noise nearby, look into noise-reduction for the windows.  Certain options, such as triple pane glass and gas filling can help cut down on noise coming in from outdoors.

Convenience: When choosing windows, think about how easy they will be to operate.  The majority of kitchens would benefit from a window with horizontal sliding, over the sink especially. This window gives convenience of easy opening while allowing ample light in.  Double-hung windows over kitchen sinks are often difficult to open, due to having to lean across the sink and lift at the same time.  Windows that are double hung with sashes that tilt in,are good choices for rooms on upper floors. Window cleaning is made simple with these windows.  No ladders are needed, and you don’t need to go outside to get the exteriors clean.

Curb Appeal: Replacement windows can intensify the beauty of your home. Windows should complement the style of your home. Colors -that coordinate with your roofing and siding as well as fit your personality and taste, without taking away any architectural integrity, should be chosen.

Value: Choosing quality replacement windows means you’ll be investing in your home, so don’t expect bargain basement prices.   But good quality windows can cut your heating and cooling bills, so you’ll be saving on your utilities.  Not only do windows and doors give you energy efficiency, they also raise the property value.
