What Is Fiber Cement Siding?

In our most recent post we shared about the great option available for homeowners who purchase fiber cement siding from The James Hardie Company.  But we realized that despite its popularity, some people are not familiar with it and don’t know exactly what fiber cement siding is.  Since this is one of our go-to siding products when people ask us for recommendations for their homes here in the Minneapolis area, we thought we’d share some of the basics.

So many homeowners we meet with have been searching for new siding options.  They are looking for something that is going to really stand out and provide the protection that they need for their homes.  Our preference? James Hardie fiber cement siding is the premier fiber siding choice to go with. This exceptional siding product offers homes with that protective cover that they need to withstand Minnesota weather and keep looking good in the process.

The Basics of Fiber Cement Siding

Introduced over 25 years ago, fiber cement siding has made its way to the market with a bang. Around 15% of all new homes are now sided with this siding, while many older homes are being re-sided with this durable option.

It is an innovative solution when homeowners want something that is eco-friendly and energy efficient, has great strength and durability, offers a low maintenance appeal, and provides overall better insulation.  All these benefits come with a surprisingly affordable price tag.

What exactly is fiber cement?  Fiber cement is a mixture of fly ash, wood pulp, water and Portland cement. Once it cures (hardens) it is extremely strong and it is able to take on moisture very well. Fiber cement can then be formed to look like stucco, wood, brick, vinyl siding or anything else that you can think of.  And because it is manufactured using sustainable natural resources, it’s considered a green siding option.

What it doesn’t have is a need for frequent maintenance or expensive repairs. And it won’t break the bank if you choose to have this siding installed on your home.  In fact, it may save you money.  Since it is fire resistant, some homeowners’ insurance policies offer a discount for homes with this siding.

Speak with us here at Window Outfitters to find out how we can provide you with the best siding for your home.  We can also answer any questions you might have regarding this siding option, as we have installed it on many homes in the St. Paul and Minneapolis area.  We are also a preferred James Hardie siding contractor for the Minnesota area.
