Fiberglass vs. Wood Entry Doors

In a post earlier this week we discussed the benefits fiberglass windows. (Click here to read that article.)

In this post we’d like to talk about fiberglass entry doors

One of the utmost noticeable improvements that you can make on your home for minimal amount of cost is replacing your old front door. It is like getting a whole new appearance for your home. If you are looking for a way to increase the quality of your home as well as its value, this is the choice to make.

Okay, so you have finally decided to invest in a new entry door for your home.

The next decision you will have to make is what material you would like for your door. You may have heard that fiberglass doors are generally less expensive than solid wood doors.  But you really want to think this choice through in order to make the right choice for you.   You’re also looking for a quality, durable door, and entry doors are not the items to sacrifice quality for price.

01jan06b2a16But we’ve got good news, because with fiberglass entry doors, you can often get a beautiful door that’s got the look of genuine wood but is much more durable and requires far less maintenance than a solid wood door.

In fact, if you live in the Minneapolis area, we don’t even recommend you install a solid wood front door if your entry area isn’t well protected by the elements.  Minnesota cold, snow, wind and rain can be hard on wood doors.  What we suggest is either adding a storm door if you’re in love with that wood door, or replacing it with a more durable material such as fiberglass.

If you are one of those people who classify themselves as a smart shopper, you probably still have many questions about fiberglass doors. Here are some answers that may just help you decide;

Does a fiberglass door last as long as a real wood door?

This question is actually less of a question about the material that the door is constructed of; it is more of a question about how well the door is maintained. Doors that are manufactured from fiberglass or wood will both last a really long time span, if they are properly maintained.  The difference is that a fiberglass door will require far less care.

How does the care for fiberglass and wood door differ?

If you install a wood door, keep in mind that every year it is recommended that you re-finish it in order to keep it safe from the effects of all the changing seasons here in the Twin Cities. On the other hand, a fiberglass door will stand up for 5 years or more before it needs to be re-coated. But even without the routine refinishing every five years it is still considered to be a low maintenance choice in doors. A fiberglass door will last for years without being susceptible to rust, mold, or other forms of deterioration.  And it won’t warp with temperature or humidity changes.

Does fiberglass look like it is a real wood door?

When you choose  your new fiberglass door, you will have a variety of styles to choose from that will give the same look as a real wood door.    The beautiful wood grain look goes deep, so you can expect it to retain its realistic appearance for years to come.
