Five Signs Your Siding Should be Replaced

One of the most noted aspects of your home is the siding.  If yours has taken a beating from the Minnesota weather, it may be time to replace it.  The choices that you make, the colors, the style, the quality make a difference in the beauty of your home. Your decision will be long lasting, because that siding is going to be on your home for quite some time.

Now that spring has hit the Minneapolis area, it’s a good idea to take a walk around the exterior of your home and take a look at your siding.  If damage has occurred to this protective layer, then the aesthetics of your home can be compromised and more potential problems could exist. Little cracks and other minor damage can develop into big problems if left uncorrected. You may soon be faced with very costly repairs. Fortunately, if you live in Minneapolis you can choose to instal beautiful siding from Window Outfitters, a respected and professional organization. There are five signs that the siding on your home should be replaced.

Typical Siding Problems That Mean It’s Time for a Replacement

  • Siding that has warped or buckled, or is beginning to rot: When performing an inspection take heed of any warping or rotting of the boards and misc. materials. If the wood beneath the siding show signs of softness then replacement must be done immediately.
  • You need to repaint often: Occasionally minor damage happens to siding that results in a spot touch-up with paint.  If you find the siding’s color has chipped or cracked in an area, you may have it touched up.  But if you find that you are repainting large areas often then there must be a problem, as good siding should be able to hold its color for at least ten years. If you find this is not the case, then consider replacing.
  • HVAC and heating costs are high and or rising: Well-insulated, quality siding should keep cooling and heating costs down. If you’re spending more than what you’d like, consider replacing the siding and its insulation.  The siding may have gaps that is letting air in (and out), making the problem even worse.
  • Recurring fungus problems: Fungus can lead to mold and mildew within the home. With the mold and mildew come further structural, pest and health problems for those living within the home. If you find that fungus, mold, or mildew keep coming back despite repeated cleaning, it may be time to replace the siding with a product that resists mold and mildew build-up.
  • Bubbles are found: Siding must keep moisture out, and if there are bubbles, that usually means moisture is getting in behind the siding.  It has failed and should be replaced.
