Four Creative Ideas For Garden Windows for Minneapolis Homes

Now that winter’s cold and snow have hit Minneapolis and we’re past the point that the days are getting longer, some of us are already longing for spring.  Oh, to enjoy those green, growing things again!

But even when the weather is warm, some homes just have a lot of green space to enjoy, especially if you’re an urban dweller.  So many resort to getting outdoors in parks to get their nature fix. There are many parks within our great state, but let’s face it, many times it can feel like we live with buildings all around us.

For this reason, many homeowners choose to have garden windows professionally installed. These windows, known also as greenhouse windows, project outward from walls outside of a home with one or more shelves where plants can live year round.

2014-07-10_1429Ideas for Using Your Garden Window

If you have been considering having a garden window installed, here are some great ideas you can use to fill that space.  The most obvious ones are for growing plants, but there are other ways to use it as well.

  • First, let’s discuss plants. This is a great place for growing plants obviously.  However, you need to be sure plants you get are the right ones. There are some plants that flourish with plenty of sunlight while others don’t. If you had a garden window installed on a side of your home which gets sunlight all day, you want plants which can handle that amount of light.
  • On the other hand, if your garden window is on a side of your house which is shaded, plants which are finicky and in need of a balance of moisture and not so much sunlight will be able to grow here as well.  Full shade plants are probably not a good idea, however; the window protrudes outside the wall of your home and gets light from all three sides as well as above.
  • A garden window is in fact a mini-greenhouse.  Use it to get an early start on your garden.  Because of the warm, sunshine, and protection from wind, a garden window is also a great place to get your seedlings started for spring outdoor planting.
  • Show off your collection.  You can place items which are glass in this window space, bringing all this light upon them. Things such as twinkling crystals, glass figurines, or other collectible items. When that sunlight at noon shines through your new garden window, a magic will come to life from these sparkling beauties.
  • Make creative use of the extra sunshine and warmth for food prep.  There can be heat generated in the window area when sun comes through glass. Enjoy something fun with your garden window, like making sun tea in a large jar. Sanitize a jar, add fresh water, tea bags, and set in direct sunlight for approximately two to five hours. After your tea is finished brewing, chill in fridge. You have a gorgeous glass container which sits in your garden window while brewing, and a delicious beverage.  And if you’re into baking bread, a garden window can be a terrific spot to let your yeast dough rise.  Plus, there is no better spot for an indoor herb garden – you can enjoy fresh herbs no matter what the season.
  • You can use your garden window space for – space. If your garden window is over your kitchen sink, free space on your counter by creating a spot for sponges, soaps, or detergent.

While garden windows are great for bringing a touch of nature into your home in the winter, they are even ideal in the spring time as well as at other times of the year.  We’ve even seen them used at Christmas as a display area for those cute Christmas villages or miniature train sets.
