Get Those Windows Ready for Minnesota Spring Time

Yes, we know there is snow in the forecast for this weekend, but that’s just Mother Nature’s sick joke. Spring actually IS here.  That means opening up the windows and letting the fresh air in.  When the warmer months roll in, make sure your windows are performing their best. If they are older and not working well, it’s time to replace them.

Whether you want a different style or hardware that will make your windows  easier to open or you’d like to have a better look and feel for your home or are just plain sick and tired of high heating and cooling bills, new windows could be the answer.

Being ready for open-window season means some attention to your current windows first. Make the most of the windows you do have with the best care possible.

Check Your Windows for Winter Damage

The winters here in Minnesota are harsh and can be hard on windows.  So   check the window frames and the glass for any damage that might have happened. This should be done on both the inside and the outside of the home. Even the smallest issues should be addressed and repaired as these can become larger ones in the near future.

Test the Window Hardware/Open Your Windows

You want to make sure that the hardware is working and in good shape. Open and close each window to see how they are functioning.  Look for rusted areas. If your windows aren’t opening easily, the hardware may need to be replaced.  If you’ve got casement or awning windows and the cranks aren’t working properly, they can usually be replaced or repaired.

With glider windows or double-hungs, make sure they slide open and closed easily. If they stick, they will need some attention.

Also check your window locks to make sure they seal your windows shut securely.

Inspecting your window should be done inside AND out. Once you’ve checked their function from the inside, go outdoors and check each window. If you notice that there is exterior damage to the frame, then it might be time to consider giving a professional window replacement contractor a call. Sometimes damaged windows can be repaired, but often a replacement is a better idea.
