Historic and Older Homes Can Be Transformed with the Right Planning (But It Takes Time)

At Window Outfitters we specialize in helping owners and would-be purchasers of older and historic homes find just the right replacement doors and windows that not only will fit in with the overall architectural style of the home and provide modern energy savings but also will comply with any historic district regulations.  We love the charm of older homes, and we know that many home buyers do as well.

If you’re considering buying one of those 100 year-old homes waiting on the market for them to restore them to their former charming glory, here’s a helpful article on what you’ve got in store for you.   Most home buyers know that any house they purchase will need some sort of remodeling or improvements to make it truly their own, but historic and older homes have their own set of (often costly) quirks that come along with them.  The best advice?  Work on structurals such as roofing, doors, and windows as well as mechanicals such as heating and plumbing first; interior decorating comes later.

And with many of the building products on the market today, you don’t have to sacrifice traditional charm and period looks for modern energy efficiency and convenience.  For example, window companies such as Pella offer lines of wood and wood-clad windows which replicate the look of the originals but offer modern energy savings.  And for other architectural touches, there are companies which specialize in historically-accurate reproductions.

With the proper care and remodeling, an old home can be turned into a modern-day treasure.  But it’s best to be prepared for what lies ahead, because those older homes often hide surprises.  If you need help finding the right windows and doors for your historic gem, please give us a call.  We also work with historic districts on behalf of our clients to be sure that your project complies with all regulations.
