How Can I Fix Those Leaky Windows and Skip the Headaches?

Now that the cold weather is here, you’re probably not opening your windows.  Windows are supposed to keep out the weather, but when they don’t work, that outside air and water can get in and make your home uncomfortable.

Are your windows leaking air and/or moisture?  When it comes to dealing with leaky windows, there is so much that can go wrong. It’s important to stay on top of the problem so you can get your life and your home back on track. No one should have to worry about problems arising from windows that leak when another Minnesota winter blasts through the Twin Cities.

While air leakage can make your home uncomfortable and cause you to spend more on heating and cooling, windows that leak water are far more problematic.  Here are some of the things you should be aware of.

Water damage can happen to both the inside and outside of your home.  The wood that is around your window can hold bacteria, mold and mildew without you even knowing it, causing your family to be sick. This water damage can also make the home’s structural integrity diminish.

The problems might not even be apparent until you go to work on another project, such as replacing your siding – then you find the water damage underneath. By the time you go to do this project, though, the supporting structure may have begun to rot, and you might get more than you bargained for once the siding is off.

Fixing water damage can become costly and time consuming, as well.  At the very least, you’ll have to replace the window frame and the wood that is around the opening. Waterlogged wood turns spongy and most likely is holding mold and/or mildew, which is potentially hazardous to your health.  With this in mind, consider the windows in your home.

Are they leaking? If they are, you may want to reconsider just caulking around them or providing different weather stripping. These methods may temporarily stop the leakage, but they’re only temporary and will need to be re-done.  And they might not take care of the problem anyway.  Plus there could be damage you can’t see.  The best way to ensure that your leaking windows are not causing further damage is to replace them entirely, especially if they are old and outdated. Stop those air and water leaks for good.   Just make sure you hire a reputable, highly skilled replacement window company to do the installation for you.
