How Minneapolis Homeowners Can Eliminate Drafts from Their Windows

If you’ve got an older home and haven’t replaced your windows in awhile, you probably dread this time of year.  You know winter is coming, and with it the inevitable drafts that make your rooms uncomfortable. And so you either learn to put extra blankets n the bed and wear more layers indoors or you turn up the heat, and then pay the price when your utility bills come.  But there’s a better solution: replace those old drafty windows, save on your heating costs, and enjoy comfort indoors.

This is NOT the answer to indoor drafts.

What homeowners refer to as drafts are known in the window industry as air leaks; that’s exactly what they are.  Air leakage occurs n two ways:  indoor air leaks out, meaning you pay for heating and cooling the outdoors; or air from outside leaks in, making your home uncomfortable.  And even adjusting the thermostat won’t take care of the feel of air flow.

Now, we find that around the Twin Cities area people often resort to those window films to cut out winter drafts. And while that may temporarily solve the problem, it makes for an unsightly look. Plus with your windows sealed up, you can’t open them on a nice day without having to re-seal them.

Sometimes extra weatherstripping or caulk can help, but again, that’s only a temporary fix.  The best way to take care of the problem for good is to replace your old air-leaking windows for modern energy-efficient windows that will fit snugly in their openings and seal out drafts for good.
