How the Right Replacement Windows Can Help You Battle Winter’s Darkness in Your Home

Even though the winter solstice is approaching, and we’re gradually moving into more daylight, we still have quite a few long, dark days ahead of us. If you’re spending time at home during the day, that means lots of lights turned on.  And that means higher electrical bills.   But despite which kinds of light bulbs you use, artificial light is no match for the health and mental benefits of real natural sunlight. Replacing your existing windows with ones that will let in more light is a good place to start.

Not All Windows Let In the Same Amount of Light

If you’re trying to maximize the natural daylight you get in your home, there are multiple factors to consider when choosing your replacement windows:

  • Window Style
  • Window Frame Material
  • Coating Options

Let’s assume you intend to go with the existing window opening size when you replace your windows.  (You CAN enlarge it, but that’s another issue that we will deal with later.).  The first thing to keep in mind is that some styles of windows let in more light than others.  These include casement and sliding windows as well as fixed ones like picture windows.  If you have existing double hung windows, just switching to casement or slider windows eliminates the middle strip and gives you a full glass rather than two separated panes.  Also keep in mind that if you order your windows with those traditional, charming grids that will cut down on light as well.  Maybe save that option for parts of your home you don’t use much during the day.

Marvin Ultimate Awning WindowAnother window style option is the often-overlooked awning window, shown here in this photo from Marvin.  Awning windows open by pushing out, and without any frame breaking up the glass area they also can maximize light, plus they are easy to operate.

Finally, keep in mind that fiberglass window frames are the thinnest.  Due to their strength and durability as well as being lightweight, fiberglass window frames are generally thinner than comparable wood, or vinyl frames.  When maximizing light is a priority, we highly recommend fiberglass windows like the ones we offer from Marvin.
