How to Choose the Right Kitchen Sink Windows

No matter which rooms you’re replacing your windows in, there are considerations for what would be best for that particular space.  This is probably most important when you’re evaluating windows to put over your kitchen sink.  Our goal as we work with homeowners in the Minneapolis area is to help them get to the very best replacement window solution, and often the kitchen sink windows get plenty of attention.

Why Is the Window Over Your Kitchen Sink So Important?

There are a number of reasons why your kitchen sink window may require extra focus:

  • It’s likely someone will be standing in front of this window for an extended time period while hand washing dishes, doing food prep, or loading/unloading the dishwasher.  So of course a window that doesn’t interfere with the view and lets in light and air is important.  And if your kitchen window has a great view, think in terms of the window frame being much like a picture frame – let it literally ‘frame’ your view.
  • A window that’s over a kitchen sink should be easy to operate, since you’ll have to lean across the sink to open and close it.  That’s why we often suggest crank-out casement windows or gliders, because they are so easy to operate.
  • Since the kitchen sink is a major source of moisture, a window in this spot should be one that resists damage from water, such as vinyl or fiberglass.
  • Chances are your kitchen sink window is going to get plenty of splatters from the sink, so you’ll want a window that’s easy to clean.  In this case, we suggest avoiding grids or grilles that require extra cleaning.

Another great option for a kitchen window if the view isn’t important is a garden or greenhouse window.  The area over the sink is perfect for growing potted plants or having an indoor herb garden.
