How to Inspect Your Windows for Air Leaks

With spring finally here in the Minneapolis area, it’s time to give your home a good inspection to see what needs to be fixed.  As you’re checking things, don’t forget to look over your windows.  The structure of your home can be compromised when windows are leaking air. Most people believe that such leaks will be easy to see as they must be large to have any impact on the home. This can be no further from the truth, as even the smallest of leaks can cause trouble if left uncorrected. Leaks are often simpler to correct in the early stages, hence, regular window inspections should be scheduled. If you do discover a leak then it will be best to call in a professional window company such as Window Outfitters, as we have   the experience to get the job done.

Repairing leaks as soon as possible will always be the best bet, even if it appears to add dramatically to your regular maintenance costs. However, these repairs will stop further problems that might result in even higher costs.   And chances are, if your windows are leaking air, they’re also leaking water, which can cause major structural problems.  And even if the air leaks are minimal, you’re spending more on heating and cooling than you need to, so repair costs should be offset by energy savings.

There are two types of tests that you can perform to detect problems with windows – the first, being the Home Air Pressure Test, or you can perform a DIY energy audit. These are simple, fast, and easy tests.

The Air Pressure Test: You will first need to seal your home. Shut all doors and windows, close those dampers and vents, and turn off all exhaust fans. Next light a candle and bring it around the home, noting where the drafts are by watching the direction of flame.  It will be pushed and pulled revealing the leaks.

The DIY Energy Audit: Seal your windows tight, then wait for the windows to stop any rattling or shaking. You must assure that the frames around windows and doors are completely sealed. Make a careful inspection of the window panes for even the slightest of cracks.

If you do discover air leaks, now is the time to get them fixed before air conditioning season starts.  Give us a call – we strive to provide the highest in quality services, and know when to spot the leaks in the windows. Having older windows replaced might be something you’re unsure about tackling, but if you’re losing a lot of your heat or cooling through them, then it might be time. Let Window Outfitters help you along in the process. We are THE window replacement company in MN.
