How to Make a Major Impact on Your Home’s Exterior: Install a Colored Front Door

Looking for a way to give a fresh look to your Minneapolis home? One of the easiest (and most eye-catching) ways to do that is to have a colored front door installed.  And if you choose an energy-efficient, maintenance-free model like a steel or fiberglass door, you’ll also be adding value to your home as well as appeal.  Real estate pros suggest that when you’re remodeling, start with the exterior first.  And of course, make sure you’re investing in your home rather than just spending money.  Some projects might be appealing, but not all add value or offer a reasonable return on that investment (ROI).  One of the best exterior projects in terms of ROI is a new front door.  Why not combine all those benefits?

Colored front doors continue to be very popular; this trend has been going for a number of years now, and from recent artlcles, it shows no signs of dropping out of favor. (If you’d like to take a look at what’s currently trending in terms of hues, Martha Stewart recently shared her thoughts – click here to see what she recommends.)

However, before you make a decision, if your house is covered by a Homeowners Association (HOA), check your docouments to find out if there are restrictions on color or a provision that it has to be approved by the HOA first.  HOA’s usually have some sort of provision about exterior colors.  The same is true if you’ve got an older home in an historic district – they likely have restrictions regarding both type of door as well as color.  But since we specialize in historic homes, we can help you navigate the rules that may cover your home.

Why Have a Colored Front Door Installed?

The reasons for having a colored front door are numerous.  Most often, we find homeowners living in cookie-cutter developments where the homes are very much the same want a door that will make their home stand out from the others around them.  Imagine your house being the only one in the neighborhood whose front door is a vivid blueberry shade like the ProVia door shown here.

Another reason for colored front doors is to draw the eye to the entry area.  Your front entry is where you welcome friends, family, and other guests.  You might choose one of your favorite colors, since the appearance of the front entry area says a lot about who lives inside.

One thing to keep in mind as you’re choosing a front door color is to make sure it coordinates well with your other exterior elements, especially your roof and siding.  Fortunately, the colored front doors most popular with our customers are the entry doors from ProVia.

Traditional Door Colors vs. Trendy Shades

As you’re flipping through the shades available on a door you’ve decided you like, you next need to choose the color.  There are traditional shades – blacks and greys, reds, blues, yellows, and greens to name a few.  But there are also trend-worthy hues that come and go.  But the term ‘trend’ can be misleading.  The beach look has been ‘trending’ for decades, and it includes mostly pastels such as peach, pale greens, aquas, pink, lilac, and more.  (Designers may caution on these shades, however – one site recommended to ‘go easy’ with pinks and pale purples.)

Whatever color you choose (and we definitely recommend you choose a shade that appeals to you), keep in mind you’re going to be looking at and living with that color for quite a long time, unless you choose to repaint the door or replace it.  How long, you say?  Well, depending on the door, a steel or fiberglass door should last anywhere from 30-100 years, most likely outliving you.

If you’ve decided you’d love a new colored front door on your home, reach out to us and schedule an appointment at our Savage MN door and window showroom.  We’d love to show you all the gorgeous fiberglass and steel doors we can install from ProVia.  We are the area’s ONLY Certified Installer for ProVia doors and windows
