How to Make Window Boxes

Shingle Style Cottage --- Image by © Royalty-Free/CorbisDon’t the new windows on this home look dressed up?  One of the easiest ways to increase your curb appeal quickly or just add some color to your Minneapolis home is to install window boxes. We’re sure you’ll have a great time sprucing up your new windows or celebrating spring with these guidelines to putting together the perfect window box.

Box Tips
When choosing a box, make sure it’s as long as your window is wide, for a nice, finished look. To prolong the life of the container, consider using plastic or metal liners, as well, so water and soil from your plants won’t damage the material. Make sure to include drainage holes, so the soil will be loose enough for roots to grow and to reduce the likelihood of root rot from dirt that’s too moist.

Plants
The most important thing to look for in a plant is how much sunlight it will need. Westerly facing windows enjoy the powerful evening sun, while northern or southern windows don’t get as much. You’ll want to plant a mix of different colors and textures which compliment the exterior of your home. Generally, the center should boast a taller type of flower, like salvia spikes, to serve as a focal point. Medium height plants like pansies are great fillers, and a cascading plant like ivy finishes the composition with a picturesque flair.

Don’t be afraid to experiment with arrangements before you leave the store, so you know what you’ll be doing when it comes to planting. The flowers shouldn’t be tall enough to block the view, and choosing just a few species tends to work better than planting many.

Care
Since window boxes don’t hold water as well as garden dirt, make sure to water the plants frequently. Otherwise, snip dead heads and feed as much as necessary for healthy foliage with vibrant colors.

When thoughtfully arranged and tended, window boxes can add charm and elegance to any home.  Now, if your windows are in such sad shape that even window boxes and flowers won’t help perhaps it’s time you gave us a call…
