Keeping the Mold Away From Your Home’s Exterior

Between this summer and spring, the Twin Cities area has seen a lot of rain; as a result, mold may be a problem for a lot of the homeowners throughout the area. Finding out how to keep the mold away from your home is essential. You want a beautiful house, without the problems that come along with it. Here are some ways to boost your curb appeal and keep the mold at bay.

  • Be sure to schedule regular cleaning of the outside of your home, and then stay on top of it.  If you hire a professional, then make sure they come on time, each time you need them too. You can prevent mold or mildew build-up and other growth on the side of your home if it is properly cleaned on a regular basis.
  • Make sure that your home is getting enough sunlight and air circulation. That means making sure that trees and other obstacles are not in the way – you want the house to properly dry off. You shouldn’t have to worry about the damp, cold areas becoming moldy because it is not being able to dry in the sun.  This may mean cutting back shrubs around your foundation so that air can circulate and dry up moisture.
  • Eliminate vines that are climbing up the walls. Mold and other growth can occur under the vines, since they trap moisture.  You should cut back on them as much as possible to make room for the siding to breathe. Do not forget to remove the moss while you’re tearing down the vines.
  • If you find any mold on the sides of the home, be quick about completely removing it.  Use a diluted bleach solution to scrub it off and stunt any future growth in the area. The longer it sits there, the more it is going to grow.  Mold is a living organism that spreads, so if it’s left in place it will only get worse.
  • If you’ve got sprinklers, may sure they aren’t watering your house, otherwise you will have to deal with growth in those areas. This is especially true if the sprinklers go off at night when the sun can’t dry it out.  Sprinkler heads should be directed away from the house.
  • Make sure rain gutters are in good condition.  Leaky gutters can lead to many problems, but mold is one of them.
  • You may need more insulation – lack of proper insulation in your home’s walls can lead to development of mold.

If mold on your siding is a recurrent problem, or if your siding has been damaged from mold or other issues, it may be time to consider replacing your siding.  We have siding products that are resistant to mold damage.   Whatever the reason, speak with us here at Window Outfitters where we are able to provide you with some of the highest quality siding on the market.  Fall is a great time to get new siding installed so your home is ready to stand up to another Minnesota winter.  Contact us today for a free estimate.
