Know All of Your Minnesota Siding Options

If you drive around the Minneapolis metro area, you’ll see that exterior remodeling is in full swing.  Homeowners are cleaning up the outside of their homes after this long, long winter. And from the calls we’re getting, many have decided this is the year for new siding.

When the outside of your home is not looking the way it should or your siding might be warping, cracking or just looking sad, you should investigate the options available. You can go with the same thing already on your home (that is always a safe option), but if you could change the look and feel of your home, then why not?

There are quite a few choices in quality home siding products available, and we provide installation of a number of them.

Popular Siding Materials

Wood

Though traditional, genuine wood siding is not the best choice for our climate. It does give off a rustic charm that you cannot get from the others, but it does come with more maintenance and upkeep. Wood is also more susceptible to damage from rodents, termites, mold, and mildew.

Vinyl and Insulated Vinyl

Vinyl siding is probably the most popular siding option, and it tends to be less expensive than some of the others.  With quality vinyl siding, you get an attractive yet nice sturdy covering for the outside of a home. However, it does come with some drawbacks. Some vinyl siding can crack easily when something hits it (everything from hail to your son’s baseball), which can be a pain to fix. And if it is not installed correctly, water getting under the siding can cause even more problems. It does look nice and requires minimal maintenance, though. And the Craneboard vinyl siding we install is insulated, which is an added benefit.

Versetta Stone® (Panelized Stone, Stone Veneer, Faux Stone)

Panelized or faux stone is showing up on homes in the Twin Cities mostly as an accent. There are a number of manufacturers of this type of siding material. The product we install – Versetta Stone from Boral – is somewhat new to the siding market.

It is a beautiful choice, and it does cost a bit more than the other options, but it provides a solid, durable cover  that resists mold, mildew, and termites. It can provide a nice barrier for fire and even can be customized to look how you’d like. It’s far less expensive to have installed as compared to genuine stone or brick, and it does provide a natural and distinctive look.  We’ve done a number of home siding projects where we have combined Versetta Stone with other products such as fiber cement siding from James Hardie.

Fiber Cement (James Hardie)

This is one of the more expensive options on the market, but it is also one of the longest lasting and most durable. It is fireproof and can resist moisture, rodents, mold, mildew and a host of termites and other bugs that can damage some of the other siding options. It comes in many style variations and looks. And you can opt for a baked-on color finish that will outlast any paint job, or you can order it pre-primed and have it painted on site to your custom color.
