Learn More About Hopper Windows

When you think of various window styles, the hopper probably doesn’t come to mind.  While not one of the fancier shapes, the hopper window can be very practical in certain applications.  Hopper windows are usually found inside schools but they can also be used in homes that need a smaller sized window that is able to be fully functional. Here are some specs that you should know about hopper windows before you buy them.

What Hopper Windows Are

07jul02a1a14These windows open into the room rather than sliding or cranking out. They are hinged at the bottom and then open inside to from the top, so they flip down. They can be a great addition to a home that has minimal space to work with. Bathrooms, garages, and basements are a couple of the best areas to put hopper windows. You can also pair them with larger windows to give a room a unique look.  For instance, hopper windows are often placed at the bottom of long, narrow inoperable windows to provide ventilation near the floor.

Their Security

Since these windows are often placed in vulnerable areas, they have to be secure. They have a lever handle that you are able to lock the top of the windows where it opens. You can look at their safety ratings to find which ones you feel the most comfortable using.

Hopper Windows Are Energy-Efficient

They are very energy-efficient windows to have. This is because they can ventilate even the smallest of spaces, but when they are closed they are great at sealing out air leaks, similar to the performance of a casement window.  And it is available to get screens for some models.

Downfalls of Hopper Windows

There are disadvantages to using a hopper-style window. They are not very private windows, and you cannot cover them with traditional curtains or blinds like you would with other windows throughout your home. You can however, choose to get glass etching or tint put on them for more privacy if it is a need.
