Maintenance Tips for Twin Cities Windows: Peeling Finish on Window Sills

As one of the leading replacement window companies serving the Twin Cities area, we encounter all kinds of issues when we meet with prospective customers in their homes.  People have many reasons for wanting to replace their windows. The most common one is they want to increase the energy efficiency of their homes. That’s understandable, since most heating and cooling loss is via window openings.  But sometimes the reason is appearance.  They have no problems with how their windows are operating, but they are tired of things like peeling window sills.

We see this often on genuine wood windows; the finish fails mainly due to condensation that accumulates.  (This is one reason we recommend you take steps to reduce the humidity level in your home.  When condensation forms on windows in the winter, all kinds of problems can develop in your home.  Check out our earlier post on this issue.)

Are Your Window Sills Peeling?

There are a number of things that can cause paint or stain on window sills to chip or peel.  Reducing the amount of moisture in your home to eliminate condensation, or wiping it up as soon as it develops can help reduce the likelihood of window sill finish problems.

In addition to condensation build-up, you might also have clogs in your window’s weep holes. (These are commonly built into storm windows as well as vinyl, fiberglass, and metal window frames.)  What are those, you ask?  Weep holes or slots are built into the lower edge of window frames to allow any water to drain out to the exterior.  But at times dust, debris, and even paint or stain can clog them, meaning the water makes its way to the interior. Cleaning them out should solve the problem.

You definitely want to take care of the water issue, regardless of the cause.  Water left to accumulate will not only cause the finish on your window sills to peel but also could cause rot of any surrounding structural lumber and/or drywall.

If you suspect your problem is in fact your windows, please contact us.  We can take a look at your existing windows and give you an evaluation of their condition as well as our recommendations.
