Minneapolis Homeowner Asks: What Is the Best Window Style for My Home?

As THE replacement window company for the Minneapolis area, our goal is to help each client find the perfect window solution for their home.  If you’ve considered replacing your windows, you’re aware of the many decisions you have to make. These include such things as:

  • What frame material do I want (wood, vinyl, fiberglass, wood-clad)
  • What window manufacturer is right for me?
  • What am I willing to spend on having energy-efficient windows installed on my home?
  • How do I plan on financing my replacement window project?

On that list you probably should add choosing window style(s) This often comes up in our initial meeting with prospective customers.  And the first thing you should be aware of is that you do not have to replace your windows with the same style you have now.  The second thing is that not all the windows in your home need to be the same style.

A great example is the home shown in the photo above.  Most of the windows are double hung with decorative grids, but you’ll note that the two windows in the gable sections have half round decorative windows above the oblong ones.  Can you see how your eye is drawn to those two areas because of the specialty shape windows?

A question we often get asked when we’re discussing an overall replacement window project is, ‘What window style would be best for my home?’  There’s no simple answer to that question, because so many factors are involved.

No one window style is right for every home.   Now, the most popular style has been and still remains the double hung window. It’s the window style most people are familiar with and picture in their minds when you say the word ‘window.’  But while this style window is indeed popular, in many cases we recommend something else.

To get to the answer of what window style(s) are right for a home, we take into account lots of things.  Primarily the architectural style of the home is what should be most important.  Modern windows look out of place on a Victorian or a Craftsman-style home.  And if your goal is the most energy-efficient windows, double hungs don’t come in first.  For the best energy efficiency in an operable window, we recommend casement windows.

Are you looking for ease of operation?  Here’s another case where double hung windows may not be best.  For example, if you have to reach over something like a kitchen sink to slide that window open, a glider window or a casement might be a better choice.

Unsure of where to go in your replacement window research?  Contact us – we offer no-obligation, no-cost consultations either in your home or we can schedule a private appointment for you at our Savage window showroom.  Our goal as always is to aide in you choosing the very best windows for you, your budget, and your home.
