Minneapolis Homeowners: Time for Fall Window & Door Maintenance

Most homeowners around the Minneapolis are working on fall maintenance on their homes, getting ready for winter.  Your list probably includes things like getting your gutters cleaned out,  changing furnace filters, etc.  But you should also have door and window maintenance on that list, too.  Your list should include such things as:

  • Cleaning glass in doors and windows:  You’d be surprised at how much more sunlight clean glass lets in.  Even the least little bit of natural sunlight can brighten up a gloomy, cloudy day.  Don’t know the right way to do it? Check out this post for some tips on how to get it done easily.   (And if you dread dragging out your ladder for exterior window cleaning, talk to us about energy-efficient replacement windows with sashes that tilt in, allowing you to clean both sides of the glass from inside your home.)
  • Clean your door and window tracks:  Even the least little bit of dust or debris can prevent your windows and doors from sealing properly.  Pay special attention to your patio door tracks.
  • Time for weather stripping: Even the most energy-efficient windows and doors can benefit from installation of proper weather stripping.
  • Check around your windows and doors for air leaks: For doors, one of the easiest ways to check is to observe the door in a dark space when the sun is shining outside.  If you see ANY light around the door, that means it’s not fitting tight.  If light can get in, so can air and moisture.   Another good way to check around both doors and windows is to slowly pass a lighted candle around the frame.  If the flame flickers, there is likely air leakage.
  • Consider storm doors: We strongly recommend storm doors for entry doors on Minneapolis homes.   Not only will they protect your entry doors from damage but also will add another layer of insulating air space.  You’ve still got time to get storm doors installed this fall!
  • Refinish any exterior wood doors and window frames: If any of your doors or windows have real wood exteriors, check them over to see if they need repainting, staining, and/or caulking this fall to prevent damage to the finish.

If you’ve got questions about the condition or your exterior doors and windows, wondering if they are ready to withstand another Minneapolis winter, give us a call for a free consultation.  We are a licensed Minnesota door and window installation contractor serving the greater Minneapolis area.
