Summer is an active time for home remodeling.  And some of the stores that specialize in home improvement products are advertising low sale prices on windows.  If you’re been considering replacing your old deteriorated windows, those sale ads might have caught your eye.  But are those advertised windows really a good deal?  Here are some things to consider:

• Some of those ads are for special order windows.  The catch here is that if you’ve mismeasured or are unhappy with the windows, unless they are defective, they probably are not returnable.  And even if they are, you may have to pay a substantial fee. 
• The sales person at the counter who helps you order your windows is not a replacement window expert, and most likely he or she is only familiar with the window lines the store carries.  There may be better windows suited for your home, your personal tastes, and your lifestyle that the sales person isn’t aware of or the store doesn’t sell. 
• For windows to perform to their optimum in terms of preventing drafts and being energy efficient, accurate measurements are a must.  If you make an error in measurement, your windows won’t fit properly. 
• Even if you hire a replacement window contractor to install your new windows, they may not provide a warranty on products you’ve ordered. 
• And if you’re considering installing those windows yourself, keep in mind that even the best windows–if not properly installed–won’t function the way they were intended to, and in the long run may cost you more in heating and cooling expenses due to air leaks.
